A Labor and Delivery Registered Nurse provides a balance of the same elements that are found in critical care, operating room, emergency department and pediatric nursing. A Labor and Delivery RN needs to have excellent communication skills because they are the link between the patient, family members and the doctor. A Labor and Delivery Nurse must be able to think in a fast passed setting and make decisions quickly. Labor and Delivery Nurses assist the physician and spend long hours on their feet.
As a L&D RN some of your duties consist of:
Making assessments of contractions, dilation, fetal heart rate, etc.
Performing follow-up duties which consist of:
Checking the newborns general condition.
Assessing the condition of the mother.
Looking for signs of distress.
Watching for signs of infections and any other problems.
One year of experience as a L&D RN within the past two years.
Active RN License in good standing.
Current Basic Life Support from American Heart Association.
