Physical Therapy Assistants aide Physical Therapists in the treatment of patients with issues related to mobility, pain, or disabilities in which proper "physical" activity can benefit the patient. While a Physical Therapy Assistant cannot assess or create a plan for treatment, they can carry out the instructions of the therapists for a patient which might include patient and equipment preparation for therapy, massages, assisting patient with proper execution of exercises prescribed by the Physical Therapist depending on the State Law. Physical Therapy Assistants may also be responsible for the recording and reporting of the patients treatment and progress to the Therapist.

It is not uncommon for Physical Therapy Assistants to perform clerical tasks which include completing insurance forms and paperwork, ordering supplies or scheduling appointments.

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the field of Physical Therapy Assistants is expected to grow faster than average, with a 29% increase in job opportunities by the year 2016. The median salary for this field in May 2006 was $41,360.
