Medical Assistants

Medical assistants may perform both clerical and clinical work necessary to keep the offices of physicians and other healthcare professionals running smoothly.  Job duties vary greatly depending on the setting and by state law, but may include clerical work such as answering telephones, completing insurance forms, appointment scheduling, maintaining client records, and arranging admissions and procedures.  Medical assistants may also perform clinical work, such as completing health histories, recording vital signs, explaining procedures to patients, assisting physicians with examinations and procedures, and cleaning exam rooms and medical equipment.

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, this field is expected to grow much faster than average, with a 35% increase on jobs by the year 2016.  The median earnings for this occupation as of May 2006 were $26,290.
